Join us for a weekend intensive in physical comedy and slapstick at the historic schoolhouse in Port Costa, CA!
Sign up for one day or both.
Day One: Beginning Slapstick and Physical Comedy. You'll learn the basics of physical comedy and knockabout clowning, from solo slapstick to partner acrobatics to building comedic bits. You’ll build essential skills like tripping, tumbling, falling, and running into walls, and we’ll cover comic violence including slaps, hair pulls, foot stomps, and head bonks. Finally, we’ll explore comic structure, and you'll string your skills together to create a short slapstick duet that will serve to develop character and tell a story.
Day Two: Intermediate Slapstick and Physical Comedy. You’ll explore obstacles with objects and learn foundational slapstick skills with props such as chair pulls and plank hits. Using architecture as our partner, we’ll find the physical comedy inherent in the space and practice classic bits like funny stair walks and door hits. We’ll also embody cartoon physicality to heighten character and ‘defy’ the laws of physics. Throughout the day, you’ll work as an ensemble to improvise short comic bits (lazzis) and devise longer physical comedy pieces to bring together all you’ve learned.
A workshop for actors, improvisers, clowns, comedians, and anyone who is excited to develop their physical funny. Open to ages 15+
Workshop Fee: $225 for one day, $400 for both. Bring a Friend Discount $25 off for both participants.
***This workshop is hosted by Idiot String as part of their artistic residency at the Port Costa School, sponsored by the Port Costa Conservation Society. For more information, please visit http://idiotstring.org/residency***
